Client Stories

Sharon Stefanyk, KC handles complex civil disputes, in the courts of Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, focusing on insurance claims involving construction litigation, fire losses, product liability, large subrogated property claims and personal injury cases.

Her clients - often insurance companies centred throughout Canada - seek Sharon's help with architects and engineers liability claims, pipeline defects, pipeline hydro testing and dewatering claims, construction defects, professional liability, coverage opinions and serious bodily injury and wrongful death cases. In addition, Sharon often handles errors and omissions disputes and municipal and government liability cases.

Both plaintiffs and defendants have turned to Sharon seeking her experience and advice. In addition to appearing before all levels of Court in Alberta, Sharon regularly represents clients in various forms of alternative dispute resolution, including private mediation, judicial dispute resolution and arbitration.

Value to Clients

Sharon has an efficient, proactive approach to litigation and dispute resolution and - as a client team leader - matches cases with the right resources. "My focus is on customer service and being responsive to my clients' needs and timelines. Clients like that I am always available to discuss their cases and provide advice as a trusted advisor based upon my years of experience in the insurance industry."

Outside the Office

In addition to being an avid golfer, Sharon is a long-time curling competitor.

  • An oil-sands pipeline distribution company was facing a substantial loss in a multi-party construction claim in Alberta. Sharon Stefanyk questioned technical experts and managed a substantial number of documents in the course of representing the company, which was able to favourably mediate the dispute.
  • A rebar company - ran into a dispute in the construction of a wastewater treatment plant. A mediation was agreed to before the questioning, resolving the matter in about a year instead of taking substantially longer.
  • An insurance client came to Sharon with a Conflict of Laws case involving a motor vehicle accident in Nova Scotia that the plaintiff moved to Alberta, where it brought a lawsuit. Sharon brought an application to Strike for Want of Jurisdiction, defeating the claim in a couple months.
